The Basic Brownie is an online bakery run by high school student Saanvi Seth. The Basic Brownie Instagram account began in 2021 after Saanvi spent quarantine experimenting and honing her baking skills. It wasn’t until a few months later that she decided to sell her baked goods. She said, “Now, as The Basic Brownie’s 2nd birthday is arriving, I could not be more happy and thankful for all the love and support I have received, and the many new people I have met.” The Basic Brownie sells more than just brownies and offers cookies, muffins, cupcakes, macarons, and cakes with an ever expanding variety of flavors and styles of decoration. The Basic Brownie also sells at pop-ups around town during market season from April to October.
Even though Saanvi can make all of those delicious sweets, I knew she had a favorite. She told me that her favorite was sugar cookies. “I love the creative freedom involved, and the ability to see the joy on customers’ faces when they see the different designs I make.” She has made cookies for graduations, Halloween, Mother’s Day, etc.. Recently, Saanvi shared some fun facts about her and she mentioned loving music. And I wondered if she needed to listen to music or audiobooks to keep herself focused while baking or decorating. She told me she loves listening to music, but “ more when I am decorating rather than actually baking. I’ll put on my music when I start with decorating sugar cookies for the day, and by the end, I can be done with my 5 hour playlist.”
I asked Saanvi what is one of the biggest obstacles she has faced since the beginning of her business. She said that balancing orders with school is the hardest thing she has to deal with. “I had to know when to say “no” to an order inquiry if I had too much to do for school, and I had to know when I needed a break from studying to find peace in the kitchen when baking.” Work-life balance is one of the biggest challenges that every business owner has to face and Saanvi seems to be able to handle this with grace.
Saanvi’s favorite aspect of her business is meeting all the wonderful new people she has connected with. “I am so grateful for all the people I have met over the months, whether it be through social media or real life. I also love connecting with other bakers, especially ones around my age.” Similarly, Saanvi loves being a small business in Memphis because of the people and bakers she gets to connect with. She loves that Memphis is full of creativity and talent.
