Top Five Reasons Your Email Open Rate is Low

Have trouble with consumers not opening your emails? There are many reasons consumers don’t open your emails. Not everyone uses e-mail. It depends on your target audience. It’s good to know what the problem is so you can fix it. Here are the top five reasons your email open rate is low.

1. Email Overload

Sending too many emails will overwhelm consumers. They’ll want to unsubscribe or delete without reading. It’s annoying to have promotion emails arriving all the time. Give your consumers a break so they can have a moment to actually think about what you’re offering.

Another way of fixing this is to do some A/B testing to see who opens your emails. With this, you can send a higher frequency of emails to those who open them. Also, shoot straight with your emails. Customers find it less spammy if you just ask for what you want.

2. Terrible Subject Lines

Attention-grabbing subject lines will increase your open rate. If consumers aren’t enticed by your subject line, they may not open your email or just delete it. Create a subject line that’ll be worth the view and make them itch to open your email. Most importantly, don’t make claims you can’t keep. Otherwise they’ll think you're scamming.

3. Emails Caught in Spam Filters

Emails are filtered into the spam folder automatically. There are some ways to avoid this:

  • Eliminate “high-risk” words from your email

  • Create an identified email account

  • Use an e-mail marketing company

4. Gmail® is Guarding against Email Marketing

Gmail invented “tabs.” In Gmail, there are social, promotions, spam, and inbox tabs. These tabs help keep your email organized. Any email marketing you do will more than likely go into the “promotions” tab. There are many people who delete everything under the promotions tab without even looking. It’s good to make sure that you're sending your emails to consumers who’ll actually go into their promotions tab to read them.

5. Email Isn’t Readable on Mobile Devices

Mobile Devices have become portable computers. Many people now use their phones to check emails, so it’s important to make sure that your email is readable from it. It’s possible your email doesn’t display as it would on a computer. Since phones are a smaller screen, they need to be able to fit the screen so your consumers can see your message clearly.
